Tennessee Vols morning report: Fulmer’s new contract, Pruitt’s defense

Tennessee Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer’s new contract and Jeremy Pruitt’s defensive coaching lead our Volunteers news for Thursday, April 19, 2018.

We have reached the day of the final Tennessee Vols spring practice before the Orange and White game. And yes, there is some news about the way the practices are being run to bring you.

Today’s morning report on Rocky Top, however, does not lead with the football updates. It actually begins with a news report that broke surrounding the athletic department as a whole and its leader. We also have SEC honors to recognize and recaps of two sporting events in conference postseason play do get to.

So it’s a big news day overall as spring continues to roll on. But let’s start with the news surrounding the athletic department.

Phillip Fulmer receives contract extension – Blake Toppmeyer, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer received a contract extension for four years worth $1 million annually. His contract will officially run through Dec. 31, 2021.

"That figure is comprised of his base salary ($300,000), supplemental pay ($600,000) and annual retention bonus ($100,000) that’s due if he remains AD on Dec. 31 each year throughout the duration of his contract"

Quart’e Sapp on Jeremy Pruitt coaching defense – Patrick Brown, GoVols247

Tennessee football linebacker Quart’e Sapp went into detail about Jeremy Pruitt’s high standards for the defense. In an interview, he said in a tongue and cheek way that Pruitt is giving away the defense’s secrets to the offense. Here’s his overall quote.

"“We’re kind of handling it pretty good,” Sapp said Tuesday, “because it’s kind of funny that he’s our coach. He’s a defensive-minded coach. He goes in the offensive meetings and tells them all the secrets and our weaknesses to our defense. And he’s coaching us (while) basically helping the offense.”"

33 UT athletes make SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll – SEC Staff

The Tennessee Vols placed 33 athletes on the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll list this year. Men’s and women’s swimming and diving dominated the list with a combined 31 athletes.

"A total of 665 student-athletes were named to the 2017-18 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll, Wednesday by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.The 2017-18 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of basketball, equestrian, gymnastics and swimming & diving. It is based on grades from the 2018 Spring, Summer and Fall terms."

Women’s golf finishes round one of SEC Championship – UTSports

The Tennessee Lady Vols golf team finished in 11th place by scoring 310 after the first round of the 2018 SEC Championship.

"The Volunteers, who were led by freshman Waverly Whiston, are just 11 strokes out of the top five."

Women’s tennis wins first round of SEC Tournament – UTSports

The Tennessee Lady Vols defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 4-1 in the first round of the SEC Tournament Wednesday. They play the Ole Miss Rebels today at 6 p.m.

"The No. 35 Lady Vols (18-10) came out hot Wednesday afternoon, taking the doubles point in straight matches."
