Tennessee Vols morning report: Final spring game preparations, Fulmer talks contract

Preparations for the Tennessee Vols spring game and Phillip Fulmer on his contract lead the Volunteers news for Friday, April 20, 2018.

Happy 4/20 to everybody. With a new coach and the Orange and White game coming, it’s safe to say Tennessee Vols fans are riding pretty high right now…right over Rocky Top.

As we get set to bring you our morning news, preparations for that game are the focus. However, we also have a few comments to show you from the university’s athletic director about his new contract.

And while there is a spring game, there are spring sports to preview. We also have a postseason to recap. Let’s get started with all of this, leading with the spring game.

Tennessee football preps for spring game – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols finished their final spring practice before the Orange and White game Thursday. Jeremy Pruitt’s first unit is now set to put on display a bit of what it could look like this fall with Saturday’s event.

"The Vols worked in helmets and shorts in cool, sunny conditions, and the brief portion of Thursday’s practice that was open to media featured routes-on-air passing work and other position drills."

Phillip Fulmer speaks after contract – Blake Toppmeyer, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer spoke Thursday after details of his contract extension were announced. He noted that being a former coach is an advantage for him in his new role with the university.

"“I know what a practice is supposed to look like,” Fulmer said Thursday. “I know how a team can be affected by injuries, or whatever it might be. I know what an excuse is and a reason is. I don’t have to just look at a win-loss record to know whether we’re making progress or not. And that’s not just in football.”"

Tennessee baseball hosts Texas A&M – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols baseball team will host a three-game series over the weekend against the No. 14 ranked Texas A&M Aggies. At 22-17 and 5-10 in the SEC, this is a huge opportunity for them.

"The Volunteers are coming off a 6-2 midweek victory at ETSU on Tuesday night and will look to snap a three-game losing streak in conference play."

Tennessee softball visits Alabama – UTSports

The Tennessee Lady Vols softball team will visit the No. 17 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide for a three-game road trip this weekend. This is another major test for them.

"The Lady Vols (38-8, 8-7 SEC) come into the series on a five-game win streak that includes a sweep over then-No. 14 LSU last weekend. The Crimson Tide (27-13, 7-8 SEC) are coming off a win of their own after beating Southern Miss on Wednesday, 4-2."

Women’s tennis falls to Ole Miss – SECSports

The Tennessee Lady Vols tennis team lost to the Ole Miss Rebels in the SEC Tournament 4-2 Thursday.

"The winner of the Texas A&M-Vanderbilt match advances to face the winner between No. 4 seed Georgia and No. 5 seed Ole Miss in the semifinals at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. CT) on Saturday."
