Jeff Brohm addressing rumors of his discussions with the Tennessee Vols in December leads our Volunteers news for Monday, May 7, 2018.

The first weekend of May is in the books, NFL Draft and free agent coverage is over, and it’s now time to look ahead to the full-on offseason. Of course, before we get there, the Tennessee Vols have lots of postseasons for the spring to address.

Recapping the weekend of two spring sports is a huge part of our news on Rocky Top for today. We also have coverage of basketball recruiting news and a return to the football coaching search in December due to what one prominent college football figure said.

So while the official academic year is drawing to a close, we’re not done with news to bring you…not by a long shot. Let’s start today with the news surrounding last December’s coaching search.

Tennessee baseball takes series vs. Kentucky – Mike Wilson, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Tennessee Vols baseball team took two of three over the weekend against the No. 13 ranked Kentucky Wildcats. They won the rubber match Sunday 5-3 without head coach Tony Vitello, who was suspended following Saturday’s ejection. With the win, Tennessee improves to 27-23 overall and 10-14 in the SEC.

"UT took an early 3-0 lead, but the Wildcats tied it in the top of the seventh. Then Chinea – who was hitting .135 at the time without a home run in his career – stepped up and launched a two-run homer to left field to send the Vols to the series win and bring Vitello racing into a frantic locker room."

Tennessee softball takes series vs. Mississippi State – UTSports

The No. 7 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols softball team defeated the No. 24 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs Sunday to take two of three from them in Starkville. Tennessee clinched a first-round bye in the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play Thursday against Wednesday’s winner between the Ole Miss Rebels and LSU Tigers.

"After they were held to three runs in a loss on Saturday, the Lady Vols (44-11, 14-10 SEC) found their offensive stride early, scoring four runs in the opening inning to pull away from the Bulldogs (35-20, 7-17 SEC)."
