Tennessee Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer’s rank in his salary leads our Volunteers news for Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

We’ve now reached the middle of May, believe it or not. And as the year continues to draw to a close, the Tennessee Vols still continue to bring us plenty of news. That keeps these morning reports flowing smoothly.

Today’s updates on Rocky Top don’t include any specific football news. But it does have A.D. news, which obviously involves a former football coach who took over during a football coaching search last December. So it counts to a certain degree.

We also have coverage of one team entering another postseason to bring you along with another one that’s already underway. That makes for still an interesting day.

So here’s our daily dose of morning news for you. Let’s start with the pay of Tennessee Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer.

Phillip Fulmer 14th highest paid A.D. – Athletic Director U

Tennessee Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer has a base salary of $300,000, but adding in his university compensation, his total yearly compensation exceeds $1 million. That ranks No. 14 among FBS A.D.’s and fourth in the SEC, behind Greg Byrne of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Scott Stricklin of the Florida Gators, and Hunter Yurachek of the Arkansas Razorbacks.

"There have been 20 athletics director changes since our 2016-2017 AD compensation survey. As perhaps good logic would suggest, total compensation payable to the new, often yet unproven, athletics director decreased by $72,859, on average (we found an average year-over-year increase of $59,630 for sitting athletic directors)."

The Tennessee Lady Vols are the No. 10 overall seed in the softball NCAA Tournament. At 45-12 and after losing on Friday to the Florida Gators in last week’s SEC Tournament, their first game will be against Monmouth in Knoxville. Also in their region are James Madison and Ohio.

"Thirty-two conferences were awarded an automatic qualification, while the remaining 32 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally and will play at campus sites beginning this Thursday."

Tennessee golf finishes first day of NCAA Regional – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols men’s golf team finished the first day of NCAA Regionals tied for 11th place. They were led by Lorenzo Scalise, who shot a 2-over 73 to tie for 18th place overall.

"The Vols shot a 22-over 306 during the opening round, which featured a delay of just over an hour after lightning was detected in the area."
