A future Tennessee Vols basketball opponent and baseball postseason awards lead our Volunteers news for Tuesday, May 22, 2018.

There’s not a lot happening in the Tennessee Vols sports world as the official academic year draws to a close, but this morning’s report ironically doesn’t have anything on the biggest sport still going on, softball, or the biggest sport on campus, football. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to cover, though.

As we get set to bring you today’s updates on Rocky Top, it’s actually men’s basketball leading the way with huge news that came through on Monday. We’ll break that down first, as it deals with an upcoming opponent.

After that, we have to recognize postseason awards for a sport in which UT did not make any postseason. And finally, there is a minor postseason sport to cover. So we still have some news. Let’s start with the basketball updates.

Tennessee basketball schedules Gonzaga – Patrick Brown, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team scheduled the Gonzaga Bulldogs for an upcoming match-up. The two will face off Monday, Dec. 9 in the first Jerry Colangelo Classic in Phoenix, Ariz. It’ll be part of a doubleheader, with Nevada and Grand Canyon facing each other in another game.

"The game will be the sixth between Tennessee and Gonzaga and fifth at a neutral site, all of them coming since 2007. The Vols and Zags played in Seattle in 2007 and 2015, in Orlando in the Old Spice Classic in 2008, at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville in 2016 and in Knoxville in 2009. Gonzaga has won four of the five games."

Tennessee baseball SEC postseason awards announced – SEC Sports

The Tennessee Vols baseball team did not make any postseason tournament. However, they did have two players achieve postseason recognition in Tony Vitello’s first year on the job. Pitcher Will Neely was on the SEC All-Defensive Team, and Nico Mascia was named the conference’s Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year.

"Florida’s Jonathan India was named the SEC Player of the Year, the Gators’ Brady Singer is the SEC Pitcher of the Year, Arkansas’ Heston Kjerstad is the SEC Freshman of the Year, Florida’s Kevin O’Sullivan is the SEC Coach of the Year and Georgia’s Keegan McGovern and Tennessee’s Nico Mascia are the Co-Scholar-Athletes of the Year."

Michaela Williams ties for 27th at NCAA Championships – UTSports

Tennessee women’s golfer Michaela Williams finished the NCAA Championship with a score of 293 (+5) over 72 holes after hitting a 74 on Monday to finished tied for 27th. Her finish ranks third all time among Lady Vols who qualified for NCAA Championships as individuals.

"Starting on No. 1, Williams parred her first six holes before bogeying No. 7. She then parred Hole 8 before closing out the front nine with a birdie to make the turn at even par."
