The Tennessee Vols bringing in a new VFL coordinator and basketball schedules lead our Volunteers news for Wednesday, May 23, 2018.

Postseason spring sports continue, but the Tennessee Vols news for today centers around other things. In fact, it centers around sports that are not going on at this moment, which is going to be a common theme in less than a month.

As we get set to bring you our updates on Rocky Top, today’s focus is about the three major sports we all love. Well, it specifically focuses on two of them, but the top story deals with the third one and any other athletic program, to be fair.

A new leader of one program and a look ahead into the future for two others are the main stories. To be fair to all of this, there is postseason coverage for one sport to bring you. But let’s start with the leader of the new program.

CJ Fayton new VFL director – UTsports

Six months after the resignation of Antone Davis, Tennessee Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer announced former Tennessee football wide receiver CJ Fayton as the new Director of Vol for Life programming. Fayton played on Rocky Top from 2002 to 2005.

"“I am very excited to have CJ Fayton join our team,” Fulmer said. “He will touch all phases of the student-athlete experience at Tennessee, from recruiting to life after sports.”"

Tennessee basketball to face WVU or Kansas next year – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes announced that the Vols would play the West Virginia Mountaineers or the Kansas Jayhawks in the official SEC/Big 12 challenge for the 2018-2019 season. The challenge schedule hasn’t been released yet.

"Either the Jayhawks or Mountaineers would be another tough opponent for the Vols, who are already scheduled to play Gonzaga (neutral site), Memphis (away), Georgia Tech (home) and Wake Forest (home) this season."

Lady Vols going back to Bahamas tournament – Dan Fleser, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team is heading to the Bahamas to play in the Junkanoo Jam next season over Thanksgiving. They last played in the event in 2013 and will join the Oklahoma Sooners, the Clemson Tigers and UAB Blazers.

"Tennessee will play Clemson at 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at Gateway Christian Academy in Bimini. Clemson will be in its first season under former Florida coach Amanda Butler.Oklahoma and UAB will play in the other first-round game. The third-place game will be at 7:45 p.m. Nov. 23. The first-round winners will play at 2 p.m. Nov. 24."

Three Vols to open men’s tennis championship – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols have three players competing in the men’s tennis championship at Wake Forest, which is set to begin today.

"Junior Timo Stodder will compete in his first match of the singles draw on Wednesday, May 23 at 1 p.m., while the duo of redshirt-junior Preston Touliatos and senior Luis Valero are scheduled to play in the opening round of the doubles bracket on Thursday, May 24."
