With such a storied history, it’s rare when Tennessee football just pulls off a major upset that shocks everybody. More often than not, they are the favorites to win, and it’s been that way since Gen. Robert Neyland catapulted the program onto a national stage.
However, with a history of downturns and revivals, the Vols have met plenty of opponents who were heavy favorites over them at different times. Even when they have been of a similar ranking to another team, other exterior factors skewed the entire public against them. And they skewed the Vegas betting lines.
Simply put, Tennessee football has been disrespected in too many match-ups by national analysts. It’s allowed for them to pull off major upsets that, in some cases, never should have been upsets to begin with.
