4. 2009-10 Elite Eight vs. Michigan State

No one expected the Vols to be in the Elite Eight. Number one the team that season was good at best. Great teams make the Elite Eight and sometimes good teams with luck.

Earlier that season, a team leader, Tyler Smith was dismissed from the team after a gun and marijuana were found during a traffic stop.

At the time of the dismissal, Smith was averaging 11.7 points per game along with 3.7 assists and 4.7 rebounds. He was averaging close to 60 percent shooting from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line.

Late in the second half, Scotty Hopson hit a free throw to tie the game up at 69-69. With one more free throw, Hopson missed the second one, and Korie Lucious got a defensive rebound.

After a foul on J.P. Prince, Raymar Morgan went to the free throw line to seal the game. He made the first one and missed the second one. However, Tennessee couldn’t make a shot to win the game.

To be honest, the Vols probably shouldn’t have been in the Elite Eight anyways. But, they were, and it was a heartbreaking loss. Tennessee is still looking for their first Final Four appearance.

Final score: Tennessee 69, Michigan State 70
