No. 4 Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers come in at the number four spot on our list. The Vols and the Cornhuskers have only met three times in program history, but it seems like they use to play all the time. Maybe that is just because the Vols couldn’t beat them in the 90’s.

  • Nebraska has a rich college football tradition. In fact, they are one of the 15 college football programs that have more than 800 wins. 893 to be precise, which is good enough for fifth. Only Michigan, Yale, Ohio State, and Texas have more wins in their program history.

In the late 90’s, which seems like so long ago now, the Cornhuskers beat the Vols twice. The first win came in the 1997 Orange Bowl where the Vols didn’t stand a chance in a 42-17 stomping. And, again in the 1999 season when Nebraska beat Tennessee 31-21 in the Fiesta Bowl.

Believe it or not but the lone win came under the leadership of Butch Jones, which is something Tennessee needs to change. Fans need to erase everything Jones from their memory banks.

Moving forward, playing such a storied program would be good for the Tennessee program. Not to mention now that Scott Frost is running the show in Lincoln, Nebraska should be much improved.
