Tennessee football Top 10 Vols teams that didn’t win a championship
Tennessee football has produced some legendary teams, and not all of them won titles. Here are the 10 best Volunteers teams that didn’t win anything.
Since the SEC formed in 1933, Tennessee football has been one of the schools that sets the goal of winning the conference. And more times than many other schools, they have delivered for their fans on that goal.
The Vols are tied with the Georgia Bulldogs for second in titles with 13 each, only trailing the Alabama Crimson Tide, who have won 26. Still, in the midst of a 20-year title drought, Rocky Top is getting restless.
While a title is the goal, Tennessee football has had some great teams throughout its history come up empty in such a quest. In fact, some of the most memorable and beloved teams in the history of the school have no championships.
In this post, we’re going to rank the greatest teams in school history who never won a title. Just for a heads up, we’re eliminating great teams before the SEC formed. After all, the Vols went undefeated in 1928, 1929 and 1931 but played in the Southern Conference at the time, and as a program still growing, they did suffer a tie all of those years.
Meanwhile, they won every game in 1896. But that was for a 4-0 record, and they played in no conference at the time. Simply put, it makes no sense to include these teams given the nature of this post. So we’re shouting them out here.
Now, with that out of the way, let’s get to recognizing beloved teams unable to bring home a trophy. These are the 10 greatest Tennessee football teams that didn’t win a conference or a national title in the era of the SEC.
