Former Vols Alvin Kamara trolls Butch Jones with Jalen Reeves-Maybin
Two former Tennessee Volunteers, Saints running back Alvin Kamara and Lions linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, had fun at Butch Jones’s expense on Twitter.
We already know how Alvin Kamara felt about Butch Jones. The former Vols running back criticized how he was underused in college earlier this year. Well, he joined another former Vol on Friday to make fun of their former coach together.
The New Orleans Saints running back tweeted at Detroit Lions linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin and sarcastically told him he was a Champion of Life Friday evening. As most people know, this reference is to Jones’s comments in 2016 that the Vols were champions of life.
Jones said that in response to them underachieving and failing to win the SEC East despite being heavy favorites to do so. It was one of his most ridiculous quotes. Here’s what Kamara said.
That tweet set off a thread of them jokingly going at each other. But what’s clear with it is that Alvin Kamara does not mind being as savage as possible. And it helps to expose how he truly felt about Jones and the coaching staff in Knoxville.
Of course, this isn’t a new thing. We already talked about what Kamara said earlier in the year. Josh Smith also criticized Butch Jones earlier this week. Combine that with the numerous departures from the program while he was head coach, and he continues to look worse every day.
At the same time, ‘Champions of Life’ was just the most recognizable of Jones’s ridiculous quotes. It followed ‘brick by brick’ and preceded quotes like ‘five-star hearts’ and ‘mental reps.’
This is why fans love Jeremy Pruitt. He’s clearly taking the opposite approach, setting a much higher standard. Pruitt has said he wants to win every game he coaches and is already preparing to do so. There’s no talk of rebuilding, even if that’s what the Vols are doing.

Such a culture change is beyond welcome on Rocky Top. It’s probably why, despite criticizing his time in Knoxville, Alvin Kamara is still willing to come back. A guy like Pruitt is so far commanding the respect of former Vols. And that’s important.
