When it comes to the kicking game, Tennessee football has a history of living up to Gen. Robert Neyland’s sixth game maxim. The Vols have used elite returners in the past to win games, and they are becoming Punter U in the NFL.
But field goal kicking has also been a huge part of the program’s history. With a few exceptions, UT seems to have a tradition of luring very reliable kickers to Rocky Top. And it has made a difference in their favor for numerous games throughout their history.
Tennessee football kickers have provided some of the best memories for fans. There are numerous kicks that were crucial to a Vols victory, and in many cases they were the only difference in the outcome.
Specific field goals, though, stand out more than others. And in this post, we’re going to break down the most memorable field goals made in UT history. This does not include missed field goals by other teams (although that would be an interesting one).
Our criteria for this includes the difficulty of the kick, whether or not it mattered in the game it happened, and the clutch factor of it. Simply put, a lot goes into making a memorable field goal, and with multiple All-Americans at the position, it takes a lot to get your name in the record books.
