Honorable mentions

Before revealing our most memorable kick, these are field goals that just missed the list but were crucial to Tennessee football anyway and deserve a mention.

1982: Fuad Reveiz, 52-yard field goal

Tennessee beats Iowa State 23-21

Fuad Reveiz is one of the best kickers in UT history and already on the list for helping the Vols tie the LSU Tigers. But before that, he saved the season. Johnny Majors’s team struggled early this year and was up and down all season, but Reveiz nailed a 52-yarder in this game, and it was the difference in a close win against a bad Iowa State Cyclones team.

2000: Alex Walls, 34-yard field goal

Tennessee beats Memphis 19-17

Tennessee would always struggle with the Memphis Tigers around this time, and here was another example. Memphis scored late to take a 17-16 lead on a Vols team that was rebuilding at the time. But a Leonard Scott return in the rain put UT in field goal range. After moving the ball just enough, Alex Walls, who was nearly perfect all season, hit a 34-yarder in the rain and cold to save Tennessee from another crushing upset.

2002: Philip Newman, 31-yard field goal

Tennessee beats Arkansas 41-38 (6OT)

The longest game in Tennessee football history was the six-overtime game against the Arkansa Razorbacks in 2002. But in the second overtime, it was clear the Vols were destined to win. This is a memorable kick for how ugly it was. Phillip Newman was the backup kicker, as Walls was hurt. And needing a field goal to tie in the second overtime, his kick was blocked. But somehow, it still barely went through the uprights without an inch to spare. The luck of that puts it on this list.

2007: Daniel Lincoln, 27-yard field goal

Tennessee beats South Carolina 27-24 (OT)

The regulation kick in this game is more memorable, and we already have it on the list. But the Vols needed Daniel Lincoln to also hit a field goal in overtime against the South Carolina Gamecocks, which he did. If he hadn’t done that, Tennessee would have still likely lost this game.

2014: Aaron Medley, 32-yard field goal

Tennessee beats South Carolina 45-42 (OT)

Aaron Medley gave the Vols their first win to signify a turnaround in the program under Butch Jones. Joshua Dobbs was the star of this game with the late comeback he led, but it would have been all for nothing had Medley not nailed this overtime kick. That allowed the Vols defense to step up and get a stop on the next possession, pushing S.C. out of field goal range with a sack to secure the victory.
