5. 1982: Fuad Reveiz, 52-yard field goal

Tennessee ties LSU 24-24

We talk about the long rebuilding process for Tennessee football under Johnny Majors before the program took off for good in his 13th season, 1989. But in 1982, things weren’t looking good for the head coach, who had failed to recreate what he built with the Pittsburgh Panthers in the mid-1970s.

The Vols opened the 1982 season with a loss to the Duke Blue Devils and then lost to the Auburn Tigers two games later. So they were 2-2 thanks to ugly home wins over the Iowa State Cyclones and Washington State Cougars, two teams who would finish the year with losing records.

At that point, conventional wisdom was likely that UT would fold on the year and Majors’s tenure would end much more quickly than anybody expected. But this game changed that.

The Vols went to Baton Rouge to face the 3-0 LSU Tigers, who had just beaten the No. 4 ranked Florida Gators and moved up to No. 18 in the polls. Tennessee battled LSU in Death Valley and pulled off a shocker…a tie.

You don’t always celebrate a tie, but for Vols fans, this was like a win. And the tie came down to the leg of Fuad Reveiz. Arguably the greatest kicker in UT history, Reveiz nailed a 52-yard field goal late to get the tie.

It was a crucial kick and one that took a lot of guts. Combine it with the difficulty, and it certainly is a top 5 memorable field goal in school history. The kick to secure a tie gave the Vols the momentum they needed, which they carried over to the next game, a major upset win over the No. 2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, their first win in the series in 12 years.
