Final take

Tennessee football has lost a ton of productivity at running back from the last couple of years. Say what you want, but even Jalen Hurd provided some real value. Alvin Kamara and John Kelly don’t even need any explanation.

  • As a result, the Vols are starting fresh here with lots of questions as they are everywhere else. But there’s no denying that the roster has talent at this position. And the potential is limitless if things are handled right.

Jeremy Pruitt and Tyson Helton have two guys who are perfect for their power running game. Madre London has proven that with the Michigan State Spartans, so he should be great for the Vols. Meanwhile, Jeremy Banks is a four-star, meaning he provides potential as a power back as well.

That one-two punch should be complemented nicely by Ty Chandler as the speedy change of pace. These three backs figure to see the most amount of action on the year for the Vols, even if Jeremy Pruitt actually wanted to use four guys.

Still, the depth is there with guys like Tim Jordan able to provide enough of a change of pace on the speedy side to backup Chandler. Add in Trey Coleman and Princeton Fant, and Pruitt has six running backs he can use at any time in his offense. Five of them are proven contributors as well. So the loss of Carlin Fils-Aime shouldn’t be as big of a deal.

Like everywhere else, Tennessee football may not be completely proven at running back. But they clearly have players, and they clearly have the proper collection of guys to run the offense Tyson Helton wants to run. As a result, the Vols need the running backs to be stars on this team. And maybe this coaching staff won’t misuse those stars.
