Tennessee football 2018 preview by position: Vols WRs
Final Take
Tennessee football has a ton of unproven talent at wide receiver outside of one player, Jauan Jennings. But there’s a ton of potential among Marquez Callaway, Tyler Byrd and Brandon Johnson, all of whom have shown flashes of greatness at different times

As a result, the Vols already have a collection of three wideouts and a slot guy whom we know can be good with the right coaching. They also have a fourth wideout and three other slot guys who can all contribute. It’s likely at least a couple of them have talent.
So the situation at wide receiver should be a very good one. If Jeremy Pruitt and Tyson Helton manage the offense correctly, some of these guys could shine. And yes, if the quarterback play is right, a couple of them could draw the attention of NFL scouts despite none of them being seniors.
And speaking of quarterbacks, that plays a huge role here. If the Tennessee football wide receivers are an elite class, which I say they have the potential to be, then the program could thrive with Keller Chryst at quarterback. That’s because Chryst, without the strong arm, knows to make the right decision. And he could allow the Vols receivers to make the plays.
If Jarrett Guarantano becomes the starter, though, there is still hope. The Vols have enough big-play guys, especially in Jennings and Callaway, that they should still be able to have a good passing offense. Like running back, there are weapons here who just need to prove something.
Tennessee football may have some work to do to take back the Wide Receiver U title for good. But Pruitt comes from a system in the Alabama Crimson Tide that maximized receiver recognition by getting such guys the ball as much as possible. Meanwhile, Helton knows how to create mismatches for them, as he did with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. And they both have a collection of talented pass-catchers on Rocky Top. So this unit should thrive once again. That’s good news for the Vols.
