The Tennessee Vols honoring the 1998 national championship team and the legal issues of former players lead the Volunteers news for Friday, July 27, 2018.

Happy Friday in Knoxville. The final Friday and July signals that football season truly is right around the corner, and there is plenty of reason to get beyond excited. More news surrounding that, with a blast from the past, leads our morning report today.

As we get set to bring you our updates on Rocky Top, news about when UT plans to honor the most famous team in school history leads our coverage. Unfortunately, that’s the only good coverage we can bring you today.

Legal issues of former Tennessee Vols fill the rest of our report. That includes more updates on the rape trial of two former players. But it also includes the arrest of a former quarterback from the late 1980s. So there is some very negative news. But let’s start with the one positive.

Vols to honor 1998 national champions in Florida game – UTSports

Tennessee football will honor its 1998 national championship team on Sept. 22, when the Vols host the Florida Gators. The move to honor them that game is fitting, as their win over Florida that year is really what propelled them into the national championship picture. It’s also the last time the fans stormed the field.

"Members of the team, as well as coaches and support staff, will be in town for a reunion to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the national championship season.Fans can purchase tickets for the game against Florida at AllVols.com or by calling 1-800-332-VOLS."

Defense rests in rape trial of former Vols – Jamie Satterfield, Knoxville News Sentinel

The arguments have been made by the state and the defense in the rape trial of former Tennessee Vols A.J. Johnson and Michael Williams dating back to a 2014 incident. Johnson did not take the stand on Friday. The case shed serious issues on the investigation, including a KPD officer and former Johnson teammate personally texting him about it and former head coach Butch Jones tipping Johnson off about it.

"Johnson and former teammate Michael Williams are standing trial on charges they raped a then-19-year-old UT athlete in the bedroom of Johnson’s South Knoxville apartment in November 2014.Johnson had been expected to testify Friday, but attorneys Stephen Ross Johnson, who represents the ex-linebacker, and David Eldridge, who represents Williams, announced Friday morning they would present no witnesses and no evidence."

Former UT accused of passing counterfeit check – WATE Staff

Sterling Henton, who was the Tennessee Vols quarterback in the late 1980s, has been accused of attempting to pass a counterfeit check of over $95,000. Henton was the starting quarterback for half the season on the 1989 Vols before he was benched in favor of Andy Kelly. He played from 1987 to 1990.

"Henton was arrested after police say he tried to deposit a counterfeit check for $95,140 at a Y-12 Federal Credit Union on Clinton Highway on June 13."
