The most obvious player on the list, Ty Chandler is almost certainly going to have a breakout year for Tennessee football. In skill positions where there’s open competition, we mostly left people off of this list.

  • That’s why, notably, there are no quarterbacks on here. Chandler should fit the same bill since he’s competing with Madre London and other guys like Trey Coleman and Tim Jordan for the starting running back spot.

However, Jeremy Pruitt has emphasized his desire to run multiple backs. On top of that, as far as filling the role of an all-purpose back, nobody fits that bill more than Chandler does. It’s why the coaches still used him on kickoff returns in the spring. And he’s going to be the best pass-catcher of all the backs.

Simply put, even if he doesn’t win the starting running back job, Chandler has the most avenues to be productive for Tennessee football. And we saw enough last year to know that he can be amazing with the ball in open space.

Add in the fact that the 5’11” sophomore who was once an in-state four-star recruit is now up to 201 pounds, and he can be an every down back as well. So Chandler is going to have more opportunities than anybody else to make plays.

This is all why Chandler is clearly the top guy on this list. He will have the most opportunities to do something with the ball in his hands. And, unlike many of the guys on here, his breakout status has more to do with him becoming a sophomore and just getting better. He figures to just be an all-around elite talent for the Vols.
