The Tennessee Vols hitting the midway point of fall camp and Phillip Fulmer on Al Wilson lead our Volunteers news for Friday, Aug. 17, 2018.

Happy Friday! We are now on the other side of two weeks to go until the start of SEC football season, and this marks the beginning of the second to last weekend where Tennessee Vols fans have nothing to look forward to the following Saturday. So Christmas for football fans is getting closer and closer.

While the wait continues, so do our morning updates on Rocky Top. And today’s news adds on to the fall camp that’s been taking place ahead of the season. But that’s not the only news for today, as other exciting things happened as well.

There’s also a bit of reflection on the 1998 national title team. Finally, to show you the academic sports year is underway, the first official competitive event for UT occurred Thursday. So there’s lots to cover. Let’s start with fall camp.

Tennessee Vols hold 11th practice – Nathanael Rutherford, Rocky Top Insider

Tennessee football is now past the midway point of fall camp. They held another practice Thursday, and this one had a focus on the passing game and defensive line.

"The Vols took the practice field again on Thursday, but this time they were practicing under the lights and in some sprinkling rain. Despite the poor conditions, UT’s players were still expected to be on top of their game and practice with as much intensity as any other day."

Phillip Fulmer speaks on Al Wilson – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Tennessee Vols athletic director talked this week about the 1998 national championship team where he was head coach 20 years ago. He said that Al Wilson helped set the tone for that team. Wilson was the star early and took the leadership mantle from Peyton Manning, and he exploded nationally after forcing three fumbles against the Florida Gators in their 20-17 overtime win. Here’s a bit of what Fulmer said.

"“We sat down and had a conversation early in January about what we expected from him,” Fulmer said. “It hadn’t really been his role necessarily. He hadn’t really taken the role to be the leader. We needed him to [lead] in every way that he could. He did. Even to the point that he was an actor.”"
