Tennessee Vols morning report: Football completes second scrimmage

The completion of the Tennessee Vols second football scrimmage and lots of Lady Vols news leads our morning report for Monday, Aug. 20, 2018.

It may be Monday. But you can celebrate the fact that it’s the final Monday in which you’re not previewing a Tennessee Vols game or a college football matchup in general later in the week. And that makes this morning news that much more worth reading.

Our update on Rocky Top for today really focuses on a ton of news that Jeremy Pruitt gave us following UT’s second scrimmage over the weekend. It really gives you the sense of excitement for the start of football season. But there are previews of other seasons as well, including news surrounding the women’s basketball program.

And speaking of women’s sports, others are already underway. We have recaps of an official game and an exhibition that occurred over the weekend as well. So let’s get started with news from the second scrimmage.

Jeremy Pruitt speaks after Tennessee Vols scrimmage – Patrick Brown, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols had their second football scrimmage on Saturday, exactly two weeks ahead of their opener against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Afterward, Jeremy Pruitt spoke with the media and gave some key bits of information. Among them were the fact that nobody has separated themselves in the quarterback race, that JJ Peterson has to finish one class still before enrolling, and that he would likely call the plays on defense during the season.

"While preseason camp came to a close this weekend for a number of teams across the SEC, Tennessee will remain in camp mode for at least the early part of this week before shifting its attention fully to West Virginia."

Women’s basketball non-conference schedule released – WBIR

As the weekend began Friday afternoon, the non-conference schedule for Holly Warlick’s Tennessee Lady Vols came out. They open the season Nov. 5 against Carson-Newman and have key match-ups against the Texas Longhorns, Stanford Cardinal and defending national champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

"The slate features 14 possible opponents. Tip times and television network assignments will be available at a later date when the information is approved for release."

Tennessee volleyball wins exhibition – UTSports

The Tennessee Lady Vols volleyball team defeated Lipscomb Saturday for an exhibition win under first-year head coach Eve Rackham. They open the regular season Aug. 24-25 with the annual Tennessee Classic at Thompson-Boling Arena and their first match coming against the No. 22 ranked Michigan State Spartans.

"After trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth set, Tennessee battled back to claim the final two frames to beat the Bisons.Trailing 4-3 in the fifth set, the Lady Vols went on a 7-2 run which included a few kills from junior Tessa Grubbs. From there, Tennessee held the lead throughout the rest of the set."

Tennessee soccer defeats George Mason – Cory Sanning, The Daily Beacon

The Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team moved to 2-0 on Sunday after defeating the George Mason Patriots at home 4-0. Amy Thompson, Salera Jordan, Rylie O’Keefe and Erin Gilroy all scored goals for UT in the game.

"The win marks Tennessee’s second consecutive 2-0 start under Pensky and 10th-straight regular season non-conference victory, dating back to the beginning of last season."
