This may come as a shock to many people. After all, we already had Madre London on this list as the feature back. And it’s clear that Jeremy Pruitt and Tyson Helton either want to use a power feature back or a by-committee system. So how does that favor Ty Chandler?

  • Well, Chandler is the one proven Tennessee football running back who would fill the role as an all-purpose back. In addition to London, the other names you hear about as potential guys in the rotation are Jeremy Banks and Tim Jordan. Banks is another power back, and Jordan does not have Chandlers’ athleticism.

As a result, Chandlers is still the big-play guy for the Vols in the offense. He’s the player that the coaches will use to take handoffs for big gains and give the starting power back, likely London, a break. They’ll also use him in the passing game as the receiving back.

Finally, Chandler is the guy who is most likely to be the main return man. Expect him to attempt to fill the void Evan Berry left on kickoff returns, and remember that he already ran back one for a touchdown last year.

The numerous chances that Chandler has to touch the ball are what make him the player most likely to win a postseason award or achieve some sort of recognition. He’s in the perfect system to thrive and could get lots of touches with two different units.

Above everything else, those touches for Chandler are specifically designed for big plays. So he will have too many chances to become a star for Tennessee football this year. That’s the biggest reason he is No. 1 on our list of Vols most likely to win postseason awards for 2018.
