Tennessee football: 10 Vols most likely to gain postseason recognition for 2018
Tennessee football hasn’t even named a starting quarterback yet. But if Keller Chryst gets the job, then it’s safe to say that he’ll have numerous chances to achieve postseason recognition. In fact, the only reason he isn’t higher on this list is because he hasn’t been assured the job yet.
However, Chryst is the fifth-year senior and graduate transfer in the group, leading us to believe that Jeremy Pruitt and Tyson Helton will lean towards him. Add in his experience in a pro-style offense, and it’s very easy to make that case.
If he does become the starter, all you then need to do is look at Tyson Helton’s experience with quarterbacks. Everywhere he goes, they turn into stars. He made Brandon Doughty a Group of Five superstar while working as Jeff Brohm’s offensive coordinator for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Then he went to the USC Trojans and turned Sam Darnold into an NFL Draft pick.
Simply put, Tennessee football has a quarterback guru in Helton. On top of that, Chryst has enough receivers to work with that he could just distribute the ball and look like a superstar doing so. That’s another huge thing working in his favor.
Chryst is already on one awards watch list for the preseason, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list. So again, he already fits the bill here. The only thing left for him to even move further up and draw attention is to secure the starting job. At that point he’ll be one of the top three guys on this list.
