Brandon Johnson was actually last year’s leader overall in receiving. Practice reports suggest Josh Palmer, who we always knew had potential if he could just learn the role better, has exploded this fall camp into the best receiver.

But the eye test shows Marquez Callaway is still one of the top wideouts on the Vols and should be a major player again. Look, he was supposed to break out last year. And against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Florida Gators, he showed just how great he could be.

However, he was stuck in a horrific system with a bad offensive coordinator to go along with it. This was a scheme that didn’t believe in getting the ball to your best playmakers in open space, even when they’ve proven they’re unstoppable.

Well, that’s likely to change this year with Tyson Helton and Jeremy Pruitt. Tennessee football going back to a pro-style offense makes Callaway a valuable player once again. And we saw enough last year to know that he is amazing with the ball in open space, can out-jump people for 50/50 balls, and has great hands.

As a result, Callaway will once again be one of the best players on this team. He’s also very good on punt returns if the Vols use him back there. The guy just has too much ability overall to not be a major offensive threat. He may have to share a bit of time this year because of the depth at the position, but in simply determining the better players, Callaway is clearly high on this list.
