Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith being cleared for contact and other practice news lead our Volunteers updates for Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018.

We’re now within 10 days before the start of the Tennessee Vols football season as the start of a new era. UT fans are excited and ready. It’s as if Christmas is right around the corner, and a big opener against a team like the West Virginia Mountaineers only makes it more exciting.

As we get set to bring you today’s updates on Rocky Top, personnel stories lead the way. The main one is good news surrounding a specific player, and it comes in light of another practice that was held on Tuesday.

We also have the death of a former Vol to mention, and there is some women’s soccer recognition to talk about. So, with the sports year underway, there is plenty of news to talk about in Big Orange Nation. Let’s start with things related to this year’s football team.

Trey Smith cleared for contact as Vols continue practicing – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols football team practiced again on Tuesday as they continued their preseason fall camp, and offensive lineman Trey Smith was cleared to go for full contact. That was the highlight of the day and amazing news for everybody on Rocky Top.

"The early portion of the practice featured some routes-on-air drills for Tennessee’s quarterbacks and wide receivers, ball-security work and route-running for the Vols’ tight ends and individual blocking drills for their offensive linemen."

UT All-American dies at 73 – UTSports

Former Tennessee Vols football All-American Paul Naumoff has died at age 73. Naumoff was co-captain of the 1966 team under Doug Dickey. He committed to UT as a wide receiver but moved over to linebacker and was taken by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 1967 NFL Draft. However, he only played for two years in the NFL.

"Naumoff, a Columbus, Ohio, native led the Vols to an 8-3 mark and a win over Syracuse in the 1966 Gator Bowl by starring at linebacker for head coach Doug Dickey.He entered the 1966 season slated to lead UT as a defensive end, where he started in 1965, but he volunteered to change positions after linebacker Tom Fisher’s sudden death earlier in the year."

MA Vignola named to women’s soccer team of the week – TopDrawerSoccer.com

Tennessee Lady Vols defender MA Vignola was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com women’s team of the week. The junior played a huge role in helping UT win their first two games of the year.

"The wingback not only helped Tennessee snap up a pair of shutouts, but she scored a goal against St. John’s and handed out a pair of assists in a 4-0 victory against George Mason on Sunday."
