The Tennessee Vols continuing practice at the start of fall classes and updates on JJ Peterson lead our Volunteers news for Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018.

The start of SEC football season is now a week away, and the Tennessee Vols begin their season in just nine days. So things are getting exciting on Rocky Top, and another big moment en route to the academic sports year being underway took shape Wednesday.

Today’s news on Rocky Top includes updates from another practice after Jeremy Pruitt spoke with the media. It also involves another update on a specific player that everybody is waiting on to join the program.

Moving away from football, we have a preview of an actual game in another sport to talk about. So again, the news continues throughout the week, and there’s plenty to cover today. Let’s start with the last football practice.

Jeremy Pruitt spoke with the media as Tennessee football held another practice. There were a few notable things from the day. Trey Smith went 100 percent after bring cleared for full contact, Jauan Jennings was at full-speed, and there was a focus on special teams. Pruitt noted that there was a bit of a bounce in the team in practice Wednesday despite classes starting.

"The first day of classes is when teams are allowed to expand their rosters from 105 players to 120, which meant Tennessee had some help Wednesday from a number of additional walk-ons who were unable to join the Vols for their first few weeks of preseason practice."

JJ Peterson still not at UT – Dan Harralson, Volswire.com

Tennessee Vols 2018 four-star linebacker commit JJ Peterson still has not arrived on campus yet, despite classes beginning Wednesday. Jeremy Pruitt said Peterson is still finishing up a class, and based on the university’s policy, he has 10 calendar days after the start of classes to enroll. Despite everything, Pruitt and the team still expect him to join.

"“He’s finishing up a class, and when he gets the class finished up, he’ll be here,” Pruitt said. “Would we have liked it to been last week? Absolutely. But that’s part of it. You’ve got to do it, and he’s working hard to do that.”"
