Tennessee Vols morning report: WVU prep begins, more Trey Smith recognition

Happy Friday to everybody! It’s the final Friday in which there is no Tennessee Vols football to follow for the weekend, but there actually are a few games to start the season Saturday. FBS schools UMASS, Rice, Hawaii and Colorado State all play this weekend.
So college football is is in the air, and SEC football is less than a week away. Our news on Rocky Top covers the continual preparations for the start of the season. There was also more national recognition that came the way of a current Vol on Thursday.
But there are other sports to cover as well. After all, one UT team played its third game of the season last night, and the other opens their season tonight. So we have more to get to. Let’s start with the football news, though.
Tennessee Vols begin preparing for West Virginia – Grant Ramey, GoVols247
Tennessee football held another practice on Thursday. Parts of the practice were open to the media, and you can see highlights from it by clicking on the link above.
"Tennessee begins West Virginia preparation on the practice field as fall camp continues for the Vols, nine days before kicking off the 2018 season against the Mountaineers in the Belk College Kickoff Classic at Bank of American Stadium in Charlotte."
Trey Smith earns Preseason Coaches All-SEC – SECSports
He may come into this year with health concerns, but offensive lineman Trey Smith is still the only Tennessee Vols player earning preseason love in the conference. He made first-team preseason All-SEC among media voters, and now he’s been named a first-team All-SEC lineman by the coaches. In both instances, he’s the only Vol to achieve preseason All-SEC for 2018.
"Georgia placed a league-leading 12 representatives on the 2018 Preseason Coaches All-Southeastern Conference Football Team, the SEC announced Thursday. Alabama was second with 10 representatives, while Auburn had nine."
Tennessee soccer draws Wake Forest – UTSports
The No. 13 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team suffered their first blemish of the year, a 1-1 draw with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on the road Thursday night. The record moves Tennessee to 2-0-1 on the year, with their next match-up scheduled for Sunday against Xavier. Katie Cousins scored the team’s only goal on a free kick in the second half.
"Trailing 1-0 in the 60th minute, Cousins stepped up for a free kick following a hard foul 20 yards from the goal. The redshirt-junior from Forest, Va. fired a shot around the Wake Forest wall of defenders inside the left post to equalize the match. It was her first goal of the season and fourth of her collegiate career."
Tennessee volleyball to open season and begin new era – UTSports
The Tennessee volleyball team will open the regular season at Thompson-Boling Arena Friday night with the annual Tennessee Classic. They face the Michigan State Spartans Friday at 8 p.m. and the Belmont Bruins and UT-Chattanooga Mocs on Saturday.
"The Lady Vols, who are led by first-year head coach Eve Rackham, opened up the 2018 season with an exhibition win over in-state Lipscomb University on Saturday."
