Tennessee football: VFL’s racking up touchdowns in Week 3 of the NFL preseason
Week 3 of the NFL preseason is in the books, and there were some former Vols that stood out. In fact, a handful of players found the end zone.
For all the Tennessee football fans out there one of the coolest things to see is former Vols doing well on the professional ranks. There have been a lot of former Vols get their chance to prove they are worthy of a roster spot in the 2018 NFL preseason.
Week 3 of the NFL preseason most certainly did not disappoint Tennessee fans as a couple of VFL’s had great games. There was even a connection between two former Tennessee players for a touchdown.
John Kelly, Los Angeles Rams
Let’s begin with last year’s starting running back. John Kelly. As you already know, Kelly is playing for the Los Angeles Rams. Truthfully there was no way Kelly was not getting a roster spot, but he very well may have played his way to the second spot on the depth chart behind Todd Gurley.
In his past game against the Houston Texans, Kelly ran for 64 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. Those 64 yards led both teams in rushing.
So far this preseason, Kelly has rushed for 197 yards on 46 attempts and has scored three touchdowns.
Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints
It is a much different preseason for the second year running back from Tennessee. Kamara has only had seven rushing attempts in two games. In week 3 against the Chargers, Kamara saw four carries for 16 yards with one touchdown.
With fellow running back Mark Ingram on a four-game suspension, Kamara could set the tone to be the starting running back the whole season.
Justin Hunter, Pittsburgh Steelers
Former Vols wide receiver, Justin Hunter saw action with the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 3. Hunter was somewhat quiet with only two receptions on 37 yards. However, he did find the end zone.
This was Hunter’s first touchdown of the preseason and if came on a beautifully 32-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger.
Nathan Peterman and Jason Croom, Buffalo Bills
I suppose the argument could be made that Nathan Peterman is not a true VFL. However, he played under Butch Jones. So, if he wants to claim VFL status, I am cool with it.
In week 3 Peterman and former tight end Jason Croom hooked up for a 17-yard touchdown in the game against the Cinncinati Bengals.
Peterman has a shot at being the starting quarterback next season, and Croom might actually see some much deserved playing time. Wouldn’t that be something for Peterman and Croom to start on the same NFL team?
We have some exciting stuff for you guys coming out on a weekly basis during football season. Recapping the past week of former Vols in the NFL is just one of them.
