The start of SEC football is one day away, and we have reached Hump Day for the week ahead of the Tennessee Vols football opener against the West Virginia Mountaineers. So everybody is starting to get more jitters and excitement in Knoxville, and the preparations for this week continue to lead our coverage.
As we get set to bring you today’s updates on Rocky Top, it’s almost all about football and a focus on this week’s game. There are multiple stories that touch on that very topic, dealing with personnel talk and the storyline of the match-up.

Shy Tuttle talks about facing Will Grier again – Dan Harralson, Volswire.com
Tennessee Vols defensive tackle Shy Tuttle was a freshman when his team lost a heartbreaker to the Florida Gators in The Swamp in 2015. The quarterback who engineered that drive, Will Grier, is now with the West Virginia Mountaineers. Here’s what Tuttle said about facing him again.
"“He was pretty good back then and he’s only gotten older, so I’m sure he’s – he’s a good quarterback. I’m excited to play him.”"
Brandon Johnson talks about WR depth – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247
Tennessee football’s receiving corps. remains a question this year with the return of Jauan Jennings to full health and the potential of Josh Palmer. However, the two leaders from last year, Marquez Callaway and Brandon Johnson, both have starting jobs. Here’s a bit of what Johnson said about the depth at the position.
"“I’m excited about the depth that we have. I feel like all of us could go out there and play each position at a high level, so I’m really excited about what we’ve got going on this year.”"
Miami Heat sign Jarnell Stokes – NBA.com
Former Tennessee Vols men’s basketball forward Jarnell Stokes signed a contract with the Miami Heat Wednesday. Stokes played for Cuonzo Martin from 2012 to 2014 and has been a journeyman in the NBA and NBDL since. This is his second stint with the Miami franchise. He joins Josh Richardson in Miami, as the two were teammates on that 2014 Sweet Sixteen team.
"Last season, Stokes played with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association, appearing in 28 games. He averaged 25.0 points, 13.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.11 steals and 1.04 blocks in 33.5 minutes per game."
