The Alabama Crimson Tide won the national championship last year. And they blew out a solid Power Five team like nobody else in the SEC this past weekend. So it would seem that Nick Saban’s unit deserves to be No. 1 in our SEC Power Rankings.

  • If we’re going off of projection and talent, that is where they belong. However, as we have said, this is based solely on the body of work to this point. And a blowout win over Bobby Petrino’s team is enough to keep these guys very high up but not at the top.

And there is one factor that could keep them a bit lower. Alabama’s quarterback controversy between Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts had clearly rattled Nick Saban to the point that he snapped in a sideline interview at the end of Saturday’s game. His inability to handle such media pressure is enough for us to say this team may not be the best in the SEC right now.

Saban was rattled enough to name Tagovailoa his starting quarterback after finally seeing what everybody else in the world could see…that he’s the better player. On top of that, he still has the elite running game and dominant defense.

So the Tide are still in good shape overall. But they have a lot to prove. With an interesting contest against the Arkansas State Red Wolves coming up, these guys have two more major tests against the Ole Miss Rebels and Texas A&M Aggies. So while they have a bit of an easy start, it could slowly get progressively more difficult. And that’s what these guys need.
