SEC Power Rankings following Week 1 of 2018 season
They still remain the most overrated team in the conference. But the Florida Gators had an amazing debut in Dan Mullen’s first game back in Gainesville. And unlike the Texas A&M Aggies, Arkansas Razorbacks, or Missouri Tigers, it came against a winning FCS team from last year.
As a result, this team did far more than the others to earn their spot in our SEC Power Rankings. By beating the Charleston-Southern Buccaneers, they were able to show just enough to jump above Texas A&M and Mizzou.
Feleipe Franks looked good for the first time ever with 219 yards and five touchdowns. Meanwhile, the rushing offense as a whole had 205 yards. Add in Charleston-Southern’s three fumbles, and at this point at least, the Gators don’t look like they had any issues adjusting to the 3-4 defense. After all, they did hold this team to six points.
To keep things in perspective, though, Mullen’s team still defeated an FCS school. So with a 1-0 record, they still haven’t proven anything yet. As a result, they’re still near the bottom of these rankings overall.
But this team is about to have a great chance to move up the rankings quickly. In this month alone, they have to visit the Tennessee Vols and Mississippi State Bulldogs. And they also host the Colorado State Rams for a decent non-conference game. But they get a real chance before all of that, and that’s their upcoming game when they host the next team in our SEC Power Rankings.
