Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Brandon Kennedy going out for the season headlines our Volunteers news for Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018.

Well, it’s the start of the NFL season, and the first game between the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles features former Tennessee Vols defensive end Derek Barnett looking to build off his game-saving Super Bowl winning play from last year. So football season is finally fully back, and everybody can get excited over it.

However, our news on Rocky Top is a bit more somber. With the football team preparing for Saturday’s match-up with East Tennessee State, UT losing a player for the season is the focus of our updates today. We also have a general recap of practice from Wednesday.

On top of that, there’s a match in another sport to preview for tonight. So, while NFL is set to begin, lots of other things are taking place in Vol Nation. Let’s start with the depressing football news in the area.

Brandon Kennedy out for season – Austin Price, VolQuest

Tennessee Vols football center Brandon Kennedy suffered a season-ending injury in practice Wednesday. The graduate transfer from the Alabama Crimson Tide suffered a non-contact ACL injury. Ryan Johnson will likely take over at center now.

"After just one game where Kennedy showed promise as Tennessee’s starting center, Kennedy’s hopes were dashed Tuesday on the practice field after suffering a knee injury."

Tennessee football practices indoors – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols football team practiced inside on Wednesday in preparation for their home opener against ETSU Saturday. Jeremy Pruitt addressed the media on Wednesday as well. In addition to Brandon Kennedy’s injury, other notes from the day included JJ Peterson still needing to get into better shape, trying to get Shawn Shamburger on the field after missing last Saturday’s game, and improving and building depth on the front seven.

"Two periods of Wednesday’s practice were open to media, and they featured individual drills for Tennessee’s linebackers and safeties, routes-on-air passing drills for the Vols’ quarterbacks and wide receivers and half-line blocking work for their offensive line."

Tennessee soccer to visit ETSU – UTSports

After the Tennessee Volleyball team lost to this school and before the Tennessee football team hosts them this Saturday, the Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team will travel to Johnson City to take on the East Tennessee State Buccaneers, who are 1-5 on the year. With a 5-0-1 record, the No. 9 ranked Lady Vols will kickoff at 7 p.m.

"Tennessee is a perfect 6-0-0 in the all-time series with the Buccaneers, outscoring ETSU 30-3 since the first matchup in 1997. The most recent contest between the two programs came last season, as UT scored six unanswered goals in a 6-1 victory at Regal Stadium."
