Tennessee football can truly run four-deep at running back. The Vols sat out Ty Chandler after his Week 1 injury against the West Virginia Mountaineers as a precautionary measure, and to be fair, it worked out fine on Rocky Top.
Tim Jordan, Madre London and Jeremy Banks all showed their value. Jordan was the leader on the day in rushing for the second straight week with 15 carries for 65 yards, and London added eight carries for 47 yards and two touchdowns.
However, the star of the day was Banks. The four-star freshman, one of Pruitt’s specific recruits, showed that he’s a power guy who finally gives the Vols a red zone offense. Banks scored two touchdowns to give the Vols a 24-0 lead coming out of the weather delay, helping to break the game further open.
For the game, he had 13 carries for 62 yards and those two touchdowns. Sure, that’s just under five yards a carry. But many of his carries were on goal line and red zone plays, and the Vols’ issues on the offensive line also held him back. As a result, Banks is on this list as one of the top performers of the day. He was clearly the star running back.
Whether or not Banks remains the feature guy going forward is up for debate. However, he showed that he can join London to provide a power duo that wears down defenses. That complementing Jordan’s and Chandler’s explosive running is a great situation for this team going forward.
