The Mississippi State Bulldogs could definitely be below the Kentucky Wildcats in our SEC Power Rankings. After all, they only have one FBS win, even if it was against a Power Five team. And it was against a Kansas State Wildcats program also in transition with two new coordinators.

However, the Bulldogs beating them the way they did is what puts them at No. 6. This program hasn’t lost a step with Joe Moorhead taking over. At least that’s what it seems like. They dropped 63 on Stephen F. Austin without Nick Fitzgerald, and then they dominated KSU 31-10.

These guys ran for 384 yards total on the ground while Fitzgerald added 154 through the air. Even when he has a bad passing game, like he did on Saturday, his mobility and Moorhead’s brilliant use of his skills allows him to make an impact.

Add in the defense of Mississippi State, which is performing better under Bob Shoop than the Vols ever did under him, and this program is in great shape. While Dan Mullen struggles to turn around Florida, these guys aren’t missing a beat.

And like we said, they’ll have a real conference test in two weeks. This Saturday they have what is likely a sure win against Louisiana Lafayette, and with UK hosting Murray State, the two facing off in Lexington the very next week will be a thriller. Who would have ever thought there would be a time when Mississippi State-Kentucky would be one of the better match-ups in the SEC?
