The South Carolina Gamecocks are just outside the bottom tier of our SEC Power Rankings. After all, their only win is over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. That is basically an FCS team. And then they lost a blowout to the Georgia Bulldogs over the weekend.

So this team could easily be considered in that tier. But their loss to Georgia is one to a good team. And their win is still an FBS win. That puts them slightly above everybody else. But don’t get too excited about where we put these guys.

Will Muschamp’s program still has a lot to prove. Think about it for a minute. Last year, en route to that 9-4 record that everybody praised, the Gamecocks didn’t beat one winning team down the stretch of the season until they faced the Michigan Wolverines in their bowl game. And let’s be honest. That Michigan team basically quit on the season.

As a result, for right now, the Gamecocks have a heck of a lot more to prove. The only fortunate thing for them is they are playing in an incredibly weak SEC East this year. So even if they don’t win, they’ll have plenty of opportunities for wins.

That starts this week. South Carolina hosts the Marshall Thundering Herd for a chance to get to 2-1 this week. Then they travel on the road to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores and Kentucky Wildcats in consecutive weeks before hosting the Missouri Tigers, who are all ahead of them right now in our rankings but shouldn’t be a better team. That’ll give them a chance to move up.
