SEC Power Rankings following Week 2 of 2018 college football season
Every Ole Miss Rebels game will be like a basketball score this year. That’s perfect for Matt Luke’s team, as he’s limited on talent because of the Hugh Freeze scandal. So he can just rely on Jordan Ta’amu to throw it all over the field, and that could be enough to win the games they need to win. It worked in the opener against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
This week, however, we had to drop them significantly. A 35-point win on its face over an FCS school should be par for the course. But Ole Miss had to leave its starters in through the fourth quarter so they could take control. These guys actually trailed 38-35 at halftime.
Simply put, the defense is that bad, which is why they are No. 10 for right now in our SEC Power Rankings. You just can’t put a lot of faith in a team that has to do that. But they are still 2-0, and they do have a win over a Power Five program. So they may have a legitimate gripe about being all the way down here.
Well, they’ll get to prove their worth this week. This week, the Rebels get to host the team they have consistently frustrated over the past few years, the Alabama Crimson Tide. And this may be the best Alabama team in Nick Saban’s career because they have an elite quarterback. So these guys could be dangerous.
Just playing decent would move these guys up our rankings. A win, however crazy of a possibility that is, would jump them up to No. 1. So hey, maybe that high-powered offense could carry this team for another week.
