Secondary

The play of the cornerbacks and the unit as a whole against Logan Marchi is giving people false hope about Tennessee football’s secondary for the year. Don’t buy into it. All the issues that existed when Will Grier and the West Virginia Mountaineers torched the Vols through the air still exist. It’s not going to change after one good day.

Going forward, the safeties still have numerous issues to work out. The lack of help from the pass rush only hurts things more. And you have to know that freshman defensive backs all over the field will only call for more mistakes in addition to learning the 3-4 scheme. So issues still exist even if one good game doesn’t reveal that.

Jarrett Guarantano

This was Jarrett Guarantano’s chance. He’s had a lot of rough situations to this point, which is why we excused his play. But against ETSU, he could be spectacular and show off his arm. He didn’t do that at all. Guarantano threw for just 154 yards and no touchdowns. He directed an offense that had to punt a lot early on, which is why the defense and special teams built the lead.

Fans will point to his efficiency and lack of mistakes. But it’s starting to look like that’s all he does. He may not lose the game, but he won’t do anything to win it. And yes, that matters this year. Keller Chryst coming in and going 3-for-3 with a touchdown pass doesn’t really help Guarantano’s case either.

Paxton Brooks

He had one punt for 34 yards. Also, as the kickoff specialist, Paxton Brooks only had half of them go for touchbacks. It looks like despite being a highly touted freshman, he’s losing his starting job. That’s a bit of a shocker.
