Tennessee football: Recapping Vols vs. UTEP by the numbers
The 2018 Tennessee football season is off to a 2-1 start. Here is how the Volunteers and UTEP Miners game broke down by the numbers.
The Vols didn’t look great, but I think that was expected with the Florida Gators coming to Knoxville next week. That sorta thing happens all the time. I don’t think there is anything to worry about for Volnation, just a simple case of the Tennessee football team looking ahead.
Here is a look at how the game broke down by the numbers.
512- total yards the Vols registered against UTEP. To break it down a little further the Vols had 345 yards on the ground and 167 through the air.
158- rushing yards from Sophomore running back Ty Chandler. This game was Chandler’s first extended amount of actions after going down in the first game of the season with an injury. 158 rushing yards was a career high, outdoing his 120 yards from last season against Kentucky.
100- percent on fourth down efficiency. One thing Jeremy Pruitt has proved to Volnation this season, it is he isn’t afraid to go for it on fourth down.
64- receiving yards by Vols wide receiver Josh Palmer which led both teams. Palmer hauled in two receptions for 64 yards with a long of 53.
50- rushing attempts by the Vols offense. There is no question the running back group is one of the best in the nation. All four running backs have SEC talent but to run the ball 50 times in one game seems like the coaching staff doesn’t trust in Jarrett Guarantano.
7- quarters the Vols defense has held their opponents scoreless this season.
4- receptions for wide receiver Brandon Johnson. Johnson led both teams with four receptions. He also had 51 yards receiving which was the most since last season against Vanderbilt.
2- fumbles by freshman running back Jeremy Banks. Look, Banks is going to be a stud. He runs with a lot of passion and just like an Alabama running back. He has to start hanging on to the football.
1- touchdown from wide receiver Jauan Jennings. Finally, Jennings had more than two targets in a football game. It’s no secret good things happen when Jauan Jennings has the football in his hands.
0- turnovers from quarterback Jarrett Guarantano for the third straight game. Guarantano is protecting the ball and looks like an entirely different quarterback from last season.
-1– passing yards from backup quarterback Keller Chryst. He went 1-of-3 for -1 yard against UTEP.
It wasn’t the best of games, but at the end of the day, a win is a win for the Vols. They are 2-1 heading into the Florida game with a legitimate chance to start SEC play 1-0.
