Once again, Jarrett Guarantano was more efficient than he was impressive. After all, he finished just 12-of-16 for 168 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. However, he responded to criticism last week that he’s not taking any shots.

Guarantano took more deep shots in this game down the field, and they often worked out. He hit Brandon Johnson for a 29-yard pass and Josh Palmer for a 53-yard pass. Guarantano showed he clearly has the arm strength, but he also proved that he can remain accurate.

Although these numbers aren’t anything special, Guarantano’s continued efficiency has been a big deal for Tennessee football. It seems as if the coaches are keeping the harness on him to a degree and just waiting for him to be able to explode in a game.

Maybe it’ll be next week against the Florida Gators. On Saturday, though, the Vols’ running game doesn’t break out the way it did if Guarantano doesn’t play so well. He is running Tyson Helton’s offense very well through three games, and this was his best one yet.

Getting sacked twice was a negative for him, but one came from the blindside, and he had no way of preparing for it. As a result, the only drawback he had all game was getting sacked once. And given his efficiency on the other end, that’s not as big of a deal. As a result, he still gets to be on this list for his play at quarterback. The guy continues to get better.
