Tennessee football: Recapping Vols vs. Gators by the numbers
The 2018 Tennessee football season is off to a 2-2 start. Here is how the Volunteers and Florida Gators game broke down by the numbers.
I’ll be the first to admit going into the game I thought this was the year for Tennessee football to start a winning streak against the Florida Gators. Boy, was I wrong! Florida doesn’t have that good of a team, but apparently, Tennessee doesn’t either.
I actually want to see Tennessee play Arkansas to see who is truly the worst team in the SEC. My money is on the Vols. The offensive line is terrible. The defensive line is lousy. The secondary is atrocious. The play calling is appalling. Everything is horrifying, and it doesn’t appear to get any better.
Here is a look at how the game broke down by the numbers.
100- percent on field goal kicking from Brent Cimaglia as he went 2-for-2 against the Gators. His last miss was against Kentucky last season.
88- receiving yards from Gator Freddie Swain on just two receptions. He also added a touchdown. The 88 yards marks a career high for the junior wide receiver.
66- rushing yards a piece by Madre London and Ty Chandler. London had 66 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown. Chandler had 66 yards on 19 attempts.
60- receiving yards for Jauan Jennings on four receptions. It is the most receiving yards since the game at Vanderbilt in 2016.
47- points were the most given up by the Vols since last year to the Missouri Tigers. It’s also the most points Florida has scored on Tennessee since the 59-20 game in 2007. Before 2007, you have to go all the way back to 1995 when the Vols gave up 62 points.
27- percent for the Gators on third down conversions. This is kind of misleading since the game was so far out of hand early.
11- total tackles from junior linebackers David Reese II. He also had 0.5 tackles for loss.
9- total tackles for loss from the Gators defense. Credit is due, but the Vols offensive line is trash.
8- total turnover the Vols had against the Gators if you count the safety and the turnover on downs.
2.9- yards per rush for the Vols against the Gators. For some reason running up the middle on first down every possession wasn’t working.
2- interceptions were thrown by quarterback Jarrett Guarantano. He only had two in his previous 12 games in his college career.
It was one of the worst games in this series, and it just happened to be at home and against a Gators team that isn’t any good. I would say it gets better, but there is a ZERO percent chance the Vols win one of the next three games,
