AP Poll, SEC Update: Vols season got tougher with Kentucky ranked No. 17
Week four of the college football season is in the books, and all SEC teams are at least one conference game into the season. Here’s how it breaks down.
Not that it wasn’t tough enough, but it appears the Vols schedule is a bit more challenging than we all expected. What is wrong with the world when the Kentucky Wildcats football team is ranked in the top 25 of the AP Poll, and the Tennessee basketball team should be ranked in the top ten?
What’s crazy is there are only four undefeated SEC teams left, and Kentucky is one of them. And, they have two conference wins already. Are the Wildcats for real? At the current moment, the SEC standing says yes.
SEC East
No.2 Georgia Bulldogs 4-0 (2-0)
No.17 Kentucky Wildcats 4-0 (2-0)
Florida Gators 3-1 (1-1)
South Carolina Gamecocks 2-1 (1-1)
Missouri Tigers 3-1 (0-1)
Tennessee Volunteers 2-2 (0-1)
Vanderbilt Commodores 2-2 (0-1)
SEC West
No.1 Alabama Crimson Tide 4-0 (2-0)
No.5 LSU Tigers 4-0 (1-0)
No.10 Auburn Tigers 3-1 (1-1)
No.23 Mississippi State Bulldogs 3-1 (0-1)
Ole Miss Rebels 3-1 (0-1)
Texas A&M Aggies 2-2 (0-1)
Arkansas Razorbacks 1-3 (0-1)
If the season ended today, we would get a rematch of last year’s National Championship Game a couple of weeks early.
Kentucky and Georiga don’t play until November 11. Before the Cats start thinking about the Bulldogs they have South Carolina, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Missouri to worry about.
If you’re paying attention the SEC has six of their 14 teams in the top 25 of the AP Poll. That would be called domination. Here is how the top 25 breaks down.
SEC- 6
Big Ten- 5
Big 12- 4
Pac 12- 4
ACC- 3
Independent- 2
AAC- 1
You might be thinking there isn’t much difference between the SEC and Big Ten or even the Big 12. Here’s where the SEC separates themselves from the rest of college football. They have four teams in the top ten. The ACC only has three teams in the entire top 25.
What sucks for Vol fans is Tennessee still plays three teams ranked inside the top ten. If you throw West Virginia and Kentucky in the mix, the Vols will have played a total of five teams in the top 20 by the end of the season.
