SEC Power Rankings following Week 4 of 2018: Vols still near bottom
Let’s be honest, we all thought the Kentucky Wildcats were a fluke. Their win over the Florida Gators was supposed to be more about a program rebuilding under Dan Mullen, not the UK program arriving under Mark Stoops!
Well, looks like we were all wrong. This team is legit, and a blowout victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs proved it. Kentucky has been slowly improving as a program ever since Stoops took over as a head coach in 2013, and this could be their peak year. As a result, they are now in the top third of our SEC Power Rankings.
We can talk about the backfield of Kentucky, but the real story is the defense stepping up when necessary. These guys held Joe Moorhead’s team to 7 points! And they held Florida to 16 points while the Gators have scored over 40 in every other game! That’s incredible.
The Wildcats have another chance to prove themselves this week at home against the South Carolina Gamecocks. Winning this one would be huge to get these guys to 5-0, and if they can survive a road trip to the Texas A&M Aggies, which isn’t impossible, these guys have a chance to get to 8-0 before facing the Georgia Bulldogs.
After all, the next two games would be against the Vanderbilt Commodores and Missouri Tigers. It sounds crazy, but given what we’ve seen so far, it’s clearly a strong possibility for this team to win its next four games.
