John R writes…I’ve always been the Tennessee fan that enjoys basketball more than football. I used to play basketball, and the game is just more enjoyable to watch. With that said the basketball program has been far more successful the past 15 years than the football team. Is it time to consider UT a basketball school now?

No. Tennessee will never be a basketball school. Only because we live in the South, and people in the South love their football. Nothing compares to it. However, I like your way of thinking.

  • For years, I’ve been saying Tennessee is a basketball school. Jerry Green always had good teams despite underachieving in many NCAA Tournaments.

The years of Buzz Peterson weren’t so great, but then Bruce came along, and he arguably is the best coach in the history of the basketball program.

The past 15 seasons the basketball program had 11 winning seasons. In eight of those seasons, the Vols hit the 20-win mark. During that time span, the program made the NCAA Tournament eight times with a handful of Sweet Sixteen berths and one Elite Eight appearance.

Conversely, the football team has struggled a bit. Not counting this season, the football has only produced eight winning seasons in the past 15 years.

Get this; the basketball team only lost one more game last season than the football did.
