The 2018 Tennessee football season is off to a 2-3 start and  0-2 in the SEC. Here is how the Volunteers and Georgia Bulldogs game broke down by the numbers.

It’s a new season with a new coaching staff and a new attitude. However, the Tennessee football team saw the same outcome against the Georiga Bulldogs on Saturday. At least the Vols can brag it wasn’t a 41-0 loss like last season.

This game was a lot closer than the final score shows. Georiga ran in two garbage-time touchdowns. It was a 12 point game before at one point in the fourth quarter. I don’t think we got the best of the Bulldogs but the Vols certainly looked much improved.

Here is a look at how the game broke down by the numbers.

251- rushing yards by the Georgia Bulldogs. Elijah Holyfield led the way with 78 yards on 16 carries. D’Andre Swift added 50 rushing yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns.

71- yard punts by Vols’ punter Joe Doyle. It was a rather impressive punting night for Doyle. He had seven punts for 330 yards with two downed inside the 20.

53- receiving yards by Vols’ running back Ty Chandler. The 53 yards was the most in the game. Jarrett Guarantano threw a swing pass to Chandler that he turned into a 35-yard touchdown.

50- rushing attempts by the Georgia Bulldogs. Late in the game when Tennessee was threatening, Georgia ran the ball all the way down the field to put the game away.

20- percent on third down conversions for the Vols. Anytime you face a top ten team you have to do better than 20 percent. However, a lot of the play calls on third down were draws up the middle.

17- yard rush by Vols’ Ty Chandler. 17 yards marks the longest run of the game for either team.

12- points scored by Tennessee is the lowest scoring total since the LSU game last season. The Vols lost that game 30-10.

9- different players had a reception for the Georgia Bulldogs. Mecole Hardman and Riley Ridley both had four receptions apiece.

4- fumbles by the Bulldogs. However, in typically Tennessee fashion, Georgia recovered all four of them.

3- sacks by Vols Darrell Taylor. Georgia didn’t have an answer for Taylor all game.

2- passing touchdowns from Jarrett Guarantano which just happened to be two more than Jake Fromm.

1- turnover against the Bulldogs which is a considerable improvement from the six the Vols had a week ago.

(-14)- rushing yards from quarterback Jake Fromm. Darrell Taylor had a lot to do with the poor rushing game from Fromm.

Next. 5 takeaways from Vols’ 38-12 hard-fought loss to Georgia. dark

It could have been worse. Most Vol fans thought the game would play out a lot like the 41-0 loss like last season. The Vols can hold their heads high heading into a bye week.
