Tennessee football Smokey Points: Top 5 Vols performers in loss at Georgia
Tim Jordan, Ty Chandler, Madre London and Jeremy Banks all saw action on Saturday. It was clear that Tennessee football would want to run the ball, especially against the issues facing the Georgia Bulldogs’ defensive front.
However, Tyson Helton abandoned it too early too often, and as a result, the Vols as a team only had 25 rushes for 80 yards. Take out the Jarrett Guarantano sacks, and they still only had 23 rushes for 72 yards. There were no touchdowns.
All of that would seem like a negative. But Chandler was still a hard enough runner to earn a Smokey Point in this game. The Vols do not make this interesting without him. On the ground, he had five carries for 27 yards, so Chandler averaged nearly five and a half yards a carry and in all honesty didn’t get enough touches.
Then there is the key play that got him on here. Down 24-6 in the fourth, Chandler was the guy to make this a game. He caught a swing pass form Guarantano in the fourth and made an amazing cut, taking it 35 yards to the house for a touchdown to make this a two-score game. Chandler finished the game with four receptions for 53 yards.
So overall, Chandler had 80 total yards and should have had way more, and he had a touchdown. He was the best producer for the Vols all game, and that’s why he was clearly the second best player on the field Saturday.
