Tennessee Vols morning report: Bye week practice, Phillip Fulmer honored

The Tennessee Vols resuming practice during the bye week and Phillip Fulmer being honored lead our Volunteers news for Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018.

We are in October, and people are still wondering what to make of the Tennessee Vols football program after a brutal five-game stretch to open the season. Knowing that it doesn’t get any easier, coverage of what they do this bye week is a huge deal.

And that’s the first bit of our focus today as we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top. We’ll take a look at how the players are still working hard. But there is some positive football news to bring you, including a huge honor for Phillip Fulmer.

The rest of the morning report focuses on the date and time of specific games and events in other sports, honors for athletes, and recaps of outings. We have a ton of news with all of that today, but let’s start with football.

Tennessee Vols resume practice during bye week – Rick Nyman, WDEF

Tennessee football went back to practice Tuesday afternoon. Heading into their open date, The Vols are trying to still build something after a 2-3 record to open the season. Nigel Warrior, Ryan Johnson and Brent Cimaglia all spoke with the media afterward, and they all insisted that the team is getting better.

"As Tennessee embarks on its open week with practice at Haslam Field on Tuesday afternoon, it is clear the Vols are buying into the message from their first-year head coach.…The Vols will put the focus inward during the bye week, looking at their own execution and how they can improve."

Phillip Fulmer named to 2018 SEC Legends Class – Kenny Hawkins, WJHL

Tennessee Vols Athletic Director Phillip Fulmer was named as a member of the 2018 SEC Legends Class. Fulmer played for Tennessee football from 1969 to 1971, was an assistant coach their from 1980 to 1992 and a head coach from 1992 to 2008. As an assistant, he helped the Vols to three SEC Championships, including back to back titles as offensive coordinator in 1989 and 1990. He then went 152-52 as a head coach with two SEC Championships and a national championship. Former Kentucky Wildcats head coach Rich Brooks joins Fulmer as coaches in this class.

"The class will be honored at the 2018 SEC Football “Weekend of Champions” Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Atlanta, Ga., highlighted by the annual SEC Legends Dinner presented by AT&T on Friday, Nov. 30 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta.  The group will also be recognized prior to the SEC Football Championship Game, which will be held at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 1."

Date set for Rocky Top Tip-Off event – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols announced the the Rocky Top Tip-Off event will take place Friday night, Oct. 19. Last year, the setting was a midnight madness type of show that gives fans a first look at the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

"The event included free parking and admission and featured an autograph session, team introductions, 3-point competitions and a dunk contest to end the night. Family activities off the court included a photo booth, face painting, inflatables, a prize wheel and other contests. Concessions were also made available."

Tennis falls in singles qualifying round at ITA All-American – UTSports

Tennessee Vols tennis players Adam Walton and Scott Jones both suffered defeats in the singles qualifying round of the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships Tuesday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. With their eliminations, senior captain Timo Stodder is the only Vol left in the ITA All-American championships, and the singles main draw begins Thursday.

"Jones (Perth, Australia) opened the day with a three-set comeback victory, defeating Noe Khlif (Illinois) 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 for his third-straight singles win. In the final round of qualifying, the Tennessee junior fell to Mattias Siimer (Michigan) 6-3, 6-4 to end his run in Tulsa.Walton (Home Hill) dropped his match to California’s Yuta Kikuchi, who was rated No. 8 in the ITA’s preseason freshman/newcomer rankings. Walton nearly forced a third set, but fell by a score of 6-2, 7-6(6) Tuesday afternoon."

Cross country wins men’s and women’s SEC Freshmen of the Week – SEC Sports

Tennessee Vols cross country freshman Karl Thiessen took home men’s SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Meanwhile, Tennessee Lady Vols cross country freshman Katie Thronson took home the same honor this week.

"Tennessee’s Karl Thiessen was the No. 2 finisher for the Vols at the Nuttycombe Invitational against a field of 19 nationally ranked teams. Thiessen finished in 24:25.8 and was the seventh finisher among freshmen in the field.…Tennessee’s Katie Thronson placed third in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Open Race with a time of 21:01.9. She has started her collegiate career with three top-three finishes and has served as Tennessee’s top finisher in all three meets this year. The Lady Vols are now 5-0 against SEC opponents this season."

Tennessee Volleyball to host Alabama – Quinton Douglas, The Daily Beacon

The Tennessee Lady Vols volleyball team is back in action Wednesday night. With 12-4 overall record and 3-1 SEC record, they will look to continue their run under first-year head coach Eve Rackham as they host the Alabama Crimson Tide.

"Tennessee is coming off of a big conference weekend in which they defeated Missouri and Arkansas in matches that went the distance. The victory over Missouri was a pivotal win over one of the best defensive teams in the country."
