Don’t give the Vanderbilt Commodores that much credit for what happened last Saturday against the Florida Gators. They built a 21-3 lead off a series of mistakes by Florida. The Gators still managed to easily get back into the game in the second half and cover the spread in the end.

They won by 10 despite spotting that lead, so we’re keeping these guys near the bottom of our SEC Power Rankings. What else can you say about a winless team in the conference with a losing record? If that isn’t warranting a bottom tier spot in these rankings, nothing is.

Once again, Vandy is hitting reality when conference play starts. And things are not about to get any easier for these guys. Their next three games are all on the road, and only one of them, against the Arkansas Razorbacks, is winnable. The Kentucky Wildcats and Missouri Tigers sandwich those games.

The best thing you can say is that maybe the bench-clearing scuffle against Florida with Derek Mason and Dan Mullen going at it will ignite this team the rest of the way, even though the reverse happened in Saturday’s game. Then maybe they could steal another one of those games.

But realistically, to get to a bowl game, they have to beat Arkansas. Then they have to win their final two home games. The last one is against the Tennessee Vols. The next to last one is against the next team in these SEC Power Rankings.
