Tennessee football: 10 Vols games vs. South Carolina that dramatically altered history
2. 2014 – Tennessee: 45 South Carolina: 42
It was another turning point game for Tennessee football under Butch Jones at the time along with the South Carolina Gamecocks under Steve Spurrier. In 2013, the upset didn’t do much for Butch Jones and the Vols in terms of the scope of the season.

But this one did. Heading into the game, UT was 3-5. However, they had found a bit of life the previous week, as Joshua Dobbs led a comeback to make their loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide at least look respectable. After a horrendous 2013 to close the season, Dobbs was about to get another start and another chance to prove he had developed.
Meanwhile, coming off his best team ever, Spurrier’s Gamecocks were struggling in 2014. They were 4-4 on the year and looking like a huge disappointment, particularly on defense. Still, they built a 42-28 lead over the Vols late.
That’s when the legend of Dobbs was born. With less than three minutes to go, Dobbs directed back to back scoring drives. It was his first of many games in which he would have over 300 yards passing, 400 total yards when you factor in rushing, and account for five total touchdowns.
In overtime, the Vols got a field goal from Aaron Medley. Derek Barnett, who had his coming out party in this game as well, would then get his third sack of the game in overtime. It ended with South Carolina out of field goal range with their possession in overtime, so they couldn’t do anything. Tennessee football pulled off a huge win, 45-42.
The victory altered history in many ways. It cemented Dobbs’s status as the quarterback of the future on Rocky Top, and he held that through the end of the 2016 season. Butch Jones also got the momentum he needed that year to finish with a bowl berth and be able to sell the program’s improvement, which did last for another year and a half at least.
On the other hand, Spurrier, who walked out of the post-game press conference after this game, couldn’t recover. His team stumbled to 7-6, and they fell to 2-4 the following year before frustration led him to retire. All of that came back to this game.
