No.5 – Evan Shirreffs, Quarterback

The 6-foot-5 three-star prospect transferred from Miami (FL) and now is the starting quarterback for the 49ers. This year hasn’t been what Shirreffs expected I’m sure with him only receiving playing time the past three games. However, it’s his starting gig after Chris Reynolds went out with a season-ending ankle injury.

Shirreffs hasn’t been great in this three appearances this season. The past two games against Middle Tennessee and Southern Mississippi, Shirreffs is 28-for-54 with 287 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Tennessee’s pass defense hasn’t been great, but they haven’t been bad either. Can Shirreffs play well against Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson? He could, especially if the defensive line can’t get a push. However, Taylor and Thompson have exceeded expectations and are tougher defenders on the outsides.

For Shirreffs to play well, he needs to get the ball out quickly which is something he can do standing at 6-foot-5. He is a bit taller and can see the field. He has some talented players that can make plays, so the key is obviously to get them the ball. Shirreffs has to play well for the 49ers to have a chance to win the game.
