Admiral Schofield – SEC Player of the Year

We all know how good Admiral Schofield can be. He was arguably one of the most important players on the team down the stretch of the season. But, does he have what it takes to be SEC Player of the Year? With all the talent on this Volunteers roster, does he have a chance to win the award?

Over the past eight games of the season which begin with a 25-point performance against Ole Miss, Schofield averaged 19 points per game. During that stretch, Schofield produced three straight games with 20-plus points. He scored 25 against Ole Miss, 24 against Mississippi State, and 23 against Georiga.

Schofield opened the season against Lenoir-Rhyne with 13 points on 6-12 shooting and added nine rebounds. It was just the first game of the season, so there was a little rust from beyond the arc. Schofield was just 1-of-4 from deep, That was his worst shooting percentage since the Mississippi State game last season.

It’s not uncommon for players from the same team to win back-to-back SEC Player of the Year honors. It happened most recently in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons with the Kentucky Wildcats. Tyler Ulis won in 2015-16, and Malik Monk won in 2016-17. It happened in 2004-05 and 2005-06 with LSU. Brandon Bass and Glen Davis took home the award in back-to-back seasons.

If Admiral can play up to the potential he did late in the year he could be in the running to win the award. It won’t be easy, but the senior has enough experience to make it happen.
