Tennessee football will be in uncharted territory against the Kentucky Wildcats as underdogs. Here are five times the UT Volunteers upset UK in the past.

How often do we see this? When Tennessee football takes the field Saturday, the Vols will be underdogs to the Kentucky Wildcats in the line and in the SEC standings. Such was the case last year, to be fair, but it’s very rare.

On top of that, UT lost last year. If they are going to win on Saturday, they’re going to have to do something they have only done a few times in history. They’ll have to have pulled off an upset over the Wildcats in football.

There are only a few times that Tennessee football upset the Kentucky Wildcats by any reasonable standard of what you might consider an upset. This includes the point spread in Las Vegas, but it also includes where the teams are in the standings.

The Vols have only won five games when they were the underdog by either one of those standards or both of them. In this post, we’re going to look at those times they actually pulled off an upset over UK.

Some of these upset wins had major implications on the season, including a division or a conference championship. And yes, one even had a national championship at play. But a couple were just completely meaningless.

The Vols are so often a favorite over the Wildcats to the point that this is only the third time since we could trace the series back to 1980 that they are actually an underdog in Vegas. And it’s also only the third time that they are lower in the SEC standings.

So let’s look at these other instances in which they were a rare underdog against Kentucky in any type of way and managed to win. And let’s look at how memorable they were. These are the five times Tennessee football upset the Wildcats.
